Graduate Student Opportunities

Study Program

The thrust of my research and educational activities within the Center for Atmosphere-Ocean Science (CAOS) is toward training the next generation of scientists in the development and application of advanced applied mathematical and computational techniques so as to provide them with the ability to study the physical environment of our planet and to be able to predict its sensitivity to change.

Research Topics

The following are examples of some current research projects that can be pursued leading to a Ph.D. in Mathematics, Computer Science, or Atmosphere-Ocean Science:

These examples highlight some of my current interests in numerical modeling and its application to environmental science as well as some of the interests of other faculty members of the Courant Institute. Please feel free to contact me or any of the other faculty members if you have an interest in any of these topics or if you have ideas of other related avenues of research that you might wish to pursue at the Courant Institute.

Student Seminar in Geophysical Fluid Dynamics

The Center for Atmosphere-Ocean Science (CAOS) sponsors a weekly student seminar series in topics relating to Geophysical Fluid Dynamics. The purpose of the seminar series is to provide a regular forum whereby students (graduate and undergraduate), postdoctorates, faculty, and others can participate in discussions on a wide range of topics in Geophysical Fluid Dynamics. As a general rule there are no formal presentations made at the seminar, instead each week a topic of discussion is proposed by a student and the discussion is then generally lead by that student. The informal nature of this seminar is intended to provide the students with a medium for discussing math and science issues relating to their thesis project and/or their course work in the general area of Geophysical Fluid Dynamics. The Center also sponsors a weekly colloquium in Atmosphere-Ocean Science featuring leading researchers from a wide variety of national and international institutions.

Field Experience

Students in the Center for Atmosphere-Ocean Science (CAOS) have the opportunity to participate in ongoing national and international field programs coordinated by numerous observationally oriented institutions with whom the Center holds strong links (e.g., USA, Canada, United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, China, Italy, Finland, and Sweden). Such field programs span an enormously wide range of atmospheric and oceanic field activities as well as geographically span the entire planet.

Summer Schools

A number of graduate-level summer schools are offered at various institutes:
